‘Espalier’ may sound like a spell that Harry Potter uses to prune his trees but, it is actually a method of training a tree against a framework so that you get a highly productive fruit tree that is essentially a two-dimensional shape that fits into narrow spaces and leaves plenty of room for growing other edibles around it. Espaliering lends itself well to grafting several varieties of fruit onto the one tree and the required pruning is simple and easy to learn.
